How it works
Most conversions are a single multiplication through a base unit: convert into metres, then out to whatever you want.
Temperature is the exception, because its scales have different zero points as well as different step sizes. Celsius to Fahrenheit needs both a multiplication and an offset, which is why -40 is the one temperature that reads the same on both.
