How it works
US and UK gallons are not the same. A UK gallon is 4.546 litres against the US 3.785, so 40 UK mpg is only 33 US mpg — a 20% difference that makes cross-Atlantic comparisons meaningless unless you say which gallon you mean.
L/100km runs the other way round from mpg: lower is better, and the relationship is reciprocal rather than linear.
