How it works

Torque is force times the perpendicular distance to the axis: τ = F x r x sin θ. Push at the end of a longer spanner and the same effort produces more turning.

The sine term is the part people drop. Force applied along the arm rather than across it does nothing at all — at 0 degrees the torque is zero no matter how hard you pull.

With rotational speed, torque becomes power: P = τ x ω, where ω is in radians per second. That relationship is why an engine's peak torque and peak power occur at different revs.
