Electricity Cost Calculator
What an appliance costs to run, per day, month and year.
COâ‚‚ estimated at 0.37 kg per kWh, roughly the US grid average. Local intensity varies enormously.
How it works
A kilowatt-hour is a thousand watts drawn for an hour. Cost is simply watts x hours / 1000 x rate.
The figure worth checking is the one nobody looks at: things that run continuously. A 5 W device left on all year uses 44 kWh, which sounds trivial until you count how many of them there are. A 1,500 W heater used three hours a day costs more than a fridge running constantly, because the fridge cycles.
The nameplate wattage is a maximum, not an average, for anything with a thermostat or a motor.
