How it works
The mean is the balance point and uses every value, which makes it sensitive to outliers. The median is the middle value and ignores how extreme the extremes are. The mode is whatever occurs most often.
Where they diverge, the distribution is skewed — and which one someone quotes usually tells you what they want you to conclude. Mean income and median income differ enormously for exactly this reason.
